 Interesting Facts

  1. Deciduous forests have five zones, that vary depending on the height of the trees in that area. The ground layer contains the lichens and mosses. The herb layer has all the shorter plants, such as grass and weeds. The shrub layer has large plants such as ferns, young tree saplings, and wildflowers. The sapling layer has young trees and species of trees that are short in general. The tree layer, or canopy layer, is the adult trees, ranging anywhere from 60 to 100 feet up.

   2. A tree that is deciduous will lose all it's leaves in the winter.

   3. A deciduous forest's growing season is when it is warm and sunny enough for the trees to produce chlorophyll and grow back their leaves. It lasts for about 6 months.

4.North America's only marsupial (pouched animal) is the Opossum.

5. Somewhere between 60-70 percent of every bird in the temperate forest will migrate to the tropics for the winter.

6. "A deciduous forest differs from the coniferous forest in that the trees are broadleaved and fall off the tree during late summer to early autumn."
